Hi Everyone,

I am sooooooo tired. I spent a long, hot day cutting and assembling a full-sized bed frame out of construction lumber and construction brackets.

I must say the concept is good but needs a lot of refinement. Here are the two photos I have the strength to upload:

Heres all the stuff:

For the most part the bed went together quite well. The construction brackets make this thing very strong and very sturdy. I think you could park a car on top of it.

Im going to make another one and next time Ill use better quality lumber and take more time to make it. Then Ill post the procedure and photos.

Its been super hot here today and Im a little dehydrated so Im going to go get something to drink and relax.

The gift boxes came out well. They need one more coat of varnish and then theyll be ready.

Ill do a Labor Day posting tomorrow.

Hi Everyone,

I was in the shop this afternoon looking at the silky oak pieces that have been drying in preparation for the tea box I am planning to make for my cousins husband Leon, and I decided that the wood was dry and stable and so it was time to begin the turn.

Here are the photos and discussion for the outer lid:

Here are the basic pieces of wood for the box. They consist of the box, an inner lid, and an outer lid. Ive been nervously drying this out in the shop as this is a critical step. The box parts are going to have to fit precisely so if there is the slightest bit of moisture still left in the wood and it dries out after Ive shaped the pieces, the parts wont fit and I wont be able to put them back on the lathe for adjustment.

Ive been drying these pieces in the shop for weeks now and they feel light enough and they havent distorted so I think now is the time to go:


This is the outer lid in its rough cut state:

 Here is the lid on the lathe. Im going to hollow out the underside of the lid and true up the face of the blank:


Here is the blank after the face has been flattened. Time to hollow it out. The pencil lines indicate the thickness of the walls of the lid, which is 7mm thick:


Hollowing only took a few minutes as this wood is soft and the blank itself is small in diameter. One thing that was important was the rim of the lid. The inside walls of the lid have to be parallel with the outside walls so it will fit properly over the box. After I finished hollowing it out, I sanded it with a sanding mop. These are nifty gadgets that enable you to sand an irregular surface:

Next, I took the lid off the lathe and attached the box and got it ready to turn. The pencil lines on the side of the box and the first line on the edge denote where I am going to remove wood so that the outer lid will fit flush with the box portion of the tea box:


In this photo you can see how the rim is being created. This is another critical step as the lid has to fit very snuggly so I can use the box to turn the top and sides of the outer lid (youll see what I mean shortly):


And here is the finished box:


Now Ive fitted the top on the box. They fit very tightly for this next step which it the  shaping of the sides and the top of the lid:


Here Ive placed the box and lid between centers for turning:


And here are the sides of the box. You can see they match up:

 And here is a photo of the outer box having been shaped, and sanded. Its ready for a finish, which well do later:


Im unable to add more photographs to this posting so Ill end this and start another and show you how the turn was finished.

Ok, Im back.

Time to turn my attention to the cedar of Lebanon box and I must say Im not please with this one at all. I dont like the color, I dont like the shape, its not hollowed out enough, and the scent is a little too overpowering for me. This box is like a bad hair cut-the only thing you can do is re-cut it and hope for the best and thats what were going to do.

Here we go:

Heres the box to begin with. Not very interesting visually:


I put it back on the lathe. Im going to reduce the outside slope of the box and create a rim on it. To do this securely, Ive placed it between centers:


Ive marked off a section of the outside for the rim and begun turning away wood from that:


Im going to cut from side to side to remove wood an reduce the slope :


And I worked in the manner for several minutes. I narrowed the rim and then split it into two beads and cut them down so they would not protrude from the surface too much:

And here it is several minutes later. The box is now deeper and wider inside and so it will be a little more useable:


And here is the box several minutes later. Ive roughly sanded it. It think it looks much better. Im beginning to get an idea about the color:


Next, the lid portion

I was looking at Richard Raffans website again and I decided to try to make an onion-dome shaped lid for the box. Looking around the shop, the only wood I had that was close to being thick enough is a piece of pine. It will turn very easily but is it thick enough for the shape I want?:


I made a turning blank. Well see how this works out:


I did my usual procedure of creating the underside of the lid to fit into the box:



And I placed it on the box to see how it looks. Not bad:


I put it back on the lathe and I began to turn. It was readily obvious that I would not have enough wood for a full onion shape so I would have to modify the shape of the lid:


Here Im beginning to shape the top of the lid:


I took the lid off the lathe and took a look at it. Without a definite shape to aim for, its difficult to understand just what it should look like instead. This is going to be one of those "Ill know it when I see it shapes." In this photo, its clear that the shape isnt exactly there yet. It looks like a giant mushroom sitting on the top of the box. I want to keep the plumpiness of the shape but refine it more. Back on the lathe it goes:

Nope.

I kept turning and removed a small amount of wood from the center of the lid and created a finial and added a little shaping to the area around the finial. Ive also given it somewhat ogee shape to the surface. Its beginning to look like something:


Im going to stop turning this for the moment and spend a day looking at it:




My youngest son just walked in and said it looks like a muffin....sigh...

Ok, Im going to leave it and possibly shape it more. I may also stain the top and the bottom of the box to match. I think that would improve matters quite a bit. More about that tomorrow.

The last box is the camphor box and that needs some major work as well. Ill try and do another posting later today.
